history
Leflore County was formed on March 15, 1871 from parts of Carroll, Sunflower and Tallahatchie Counties. Like the district capital, it was named after Greenwood LeFlore , a Choctaw chief .
On August 31, 1955, the body of Emmett Till , an African-American who had been murdered for racist reasons, was discovered in the Tallahatchie River near Money . The murder of the boy and the subsequent legal appraisal, which ended with an acquittal of the murderers by an exclusively white jury, triggered large protests and is one of the triggers for the subsequent black civil rights movement in the USA.
37 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).
