The Coahoma County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Clarksdale , named after John Clark , an early settler in the area.

The county is located in northwest Mississippi, bordering Arkansas to the west , the natural boundary being formed by the Mississippi River . Coahoma County covers an area of 1,510 square kilometers, of which 75 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Coahoma County was formed on February 9, 1836 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after the Indian word for puma .

According to the 2000 census , Coahoma County had 30,622 people in 10,553 households and 7,482 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 29.28 percent white, 69.21 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 10,553 households, 36.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 37.2 percent were married couples living together, 28.7 percent were single mothers, and 29.1 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent of all households were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.42.
33.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 19.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.3 percent were 65 years or older . The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 84.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 77.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 22,338 USD , for a family is 26,640 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,841 versus $ 19,611 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,558. About 29.8 percent of families and 35.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
