The Amite County is a county in the state of Mississippi in the United States . The county seat is Liberty .
geography
The county is located in southwest Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the south and has an area of 1,895 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is adjacent to the following counties and parishes in a clockwise direction:

history
Amite County was formed on February 24, 1809 from parts of Wilkinson County. It was named after the Amite River that runs here .
On October 20, 1977, the band Lynyrd Skynyrd and their crew crashed in Amite County in a convair about eight miles from the city of McComb. Of the 26 inmates, five were killed and many were seriously injured.

As of the 2000 census , Amite County had 13,599 people in 5,271 households and 3,879 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.42 percent white, 42.65 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 5,271 households, 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1 percent were married couples living together, 16.3 percent were single mothers, and 26.4 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent of all households were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 15.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 statistically males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.8 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 26,033 US dollars , for a family is 31,256 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 28,306 compared to $ 16,173 for women. The per capita income was $ 14,048. About 19.3 percent of families and 22.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
