history

Covington County was formed on February 5, 1819 from parts of Lawrence Counties and Wayne Counties. It was named after General Leonard W. Covington , who died in the British-American War of 1812.

One building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018, the Covington County Courthouse .

According to the 2000 census , Covington County had 19,407 people in 7,126 households and 5,280 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer.
