Copiah County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Hazlehurst , named after George Hazlehurst , a railroad engineer.

The county is located in central southwest Mississippi, about 50 km to the west from Louisiana and the Mississippi River , and has an area of 2019 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Copiah County was formed on January 21, 1823 from parts of Hinds County. It was named after an Indian word that translated means screaming panther .

According to the 2000 census , Copiah County had 28,757 people in 10,142 households and 7,494 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 47.80 percent white, 50.95 percent African American, 0.07 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.15 percent of the population.
Of the 10,142 households, 34.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.7 percent were married couples living together, 20.1 percent were single mothers, and 26.1 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent of all households were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.20.
26.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 12.5 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.7 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 89.1 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 26,358 USD , for a family is 31,079 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,763 versus $ 20,104 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,408. About 22.0 percent of families and 25.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
