The county is located in northeast Mississippi, about 45 km to the east from Alabama , and covers an area of ​​1,196 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Oktibbeha County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw Land . The name is derived from an Indian term.

According to the United States Census 2000 , there were 42,902 people in 15,945 households and 9,264 families in Oktibbeha County. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.66 percent white, 37.43 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 2.53 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races.
