George Washington

Washington County was formed on January 29, 1827 from parts of Warren County and Yazoo County. It was named after George Washington (1732–1799), commander in chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (1775 to 1783) and first President of the United States (1789–1797).

One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Winterville Site archaeological site . A total of 24 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Washington County had 62,977 people in 22,158 households and 15,931 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer.
