Washington County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Greenville .

The county is located to the west of Mississippi, bordering Arkansas , separated by the Mississippi , which forms the natural boundary and has an area of 1972 square kilometers, of which 97 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Washington County was formed on January 29, 1827 from parts of Warren County and Yazoo County. It was named after George Washington (1732–1799), commander in chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (1775 to 1783) and first President of the United States (1789–1797).
One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Winterville Site archaeological site . A total of 24 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Washington County had 62,977 people in 22,158 households and 15,931 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 33.97 percent white, 64.57 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.84 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 22,158 households, 36.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 40.6 percent were married couples living together, 26.0 percent were single mothers, and 28.1 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.35 people.
31.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 87.7 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 80.3 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 25,757 USD , for a family is 30,324 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,266 versus $ 20,223 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,430. About 24.9 percent of families and 29.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
