The county is located in the south of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the south and has an area of 1047 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

history
Walthall County was formed on March 16, 1910 from parts of Marion County and Pike County. It is named after Edward C. Walthall (1831-1898), a general in the army of the Confederation in the American Civil War and US-Senator of Mississippi (1885-1898).
Four buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 United States Census , Walthall County had 15,156 people in 5,571 households and 4,111 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 54.61 percent white, 44.09 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.33 percent of the population.
Of the 5,571 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 16.9 percent were single mothers, and 26.2 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.19.
28.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24, 25.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.1 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 91.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 86.2 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 22,945 USD , for a family is 29,169 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,745 versus $ 16,909 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,563. About 22.4 percent of families and 27.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
