history

EC Walthall

Walthall County was formed on March 16, 1910 from parts of Marion County and Pike County. It is named after Edward C. Walthall (1831-1898), a general in the army of the Confederation in the American Civil War and US-Senator of Mississippi (1885-1898).

Four buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 United States Census , Walthall County had 15,156 people in 5,571 households and 4,111 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 54.61 percent white, 44.09 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races.
