history
Webster County was formed on April 6, 1874 from parts of Chickasaw, Choctaw, Montgomery and Oktibbeha Counties. It was named after Daniel Webster (1782-1852), a US Senator from Massachusetts (1827-1841, 1845-1850) and Secretary of State of the United States (1841-1843, 1850-1852).
Two places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 3, 2018.

As of the 2000 census , Webster County had 10,294 people in 3,905 households and 2,877 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.55 percent white, 20.93 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.84 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.39 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.69 percent of the population.
Of the 3,905 households, 33.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.2 percent were married couples living together, 13.1 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households were single households and 12.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 16.4 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.4 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,834 USD , for a family is 34,969 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,297 versus $ 19,627 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,109. About 14.8 percent of families and 18.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
