history

Marion County was formed on December 9, 1811 from parts of Amite, Franklin and Wayne Counties. It was named after Francis Marion , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 25,595 people in 9,336 households and 6,880 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.96 percent white, 31.87 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.7 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 88.8 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 24,555 USD , for a family is 29,894 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,909 versus $ 17,192 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,301. About 20.7 percent of families and 24.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
