The Attala County is a county in the state of Mississippi in the United States . The county seat is Kosciusko , which was named after Tadeusz Kościuszko , a Polish officer who fought in the American War of Independence . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

history

Attala County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw County. It was named after a fictional Indian heroine.

As of the 2000 census , Attala County had 19,661 people in 7,567 households and 5,380 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.34 percent white, 40.00 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.65 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races.
