The Attala County is a county in the state of Mississippi in the United States . The county seat is Kosciusko , which was named after Tadeusz Kościuszko , a Polish officer who fought in the American War of Independence . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is just north of the geographic center of Mississippi and covers an area of 1,909 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Attala County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw County. It was named after a fictional Indian heroine.

As of the 2000 census , Attala County had 19,661 people in 7,567 households and 5,380 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.34 percent white, 40.00 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.65 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.42 percent of the population.
Of the 7,567 households, 32.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.3 percent were married couples living together, 16.7 percent were single mothers, and 28.9 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households were single households and 14.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.07.
25.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 25.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 17.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 91.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.7 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 24,794 United States dollars , for a family is 30,796 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,180 versus $ 17,394 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,782. About 18.3 percent of families and 21.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
