The Noxubee County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Macon , which was named after the city of the same name in Georgia .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Mississippi, borders Alabama to the east and has an area of 1,813 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Noxubee County was formed on February 25, 1836 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after the Noxubee River flowing in this area .
One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty Site . A total of 13 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Noxubee County had 12,548 people in 4,470 households and 3,222 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.30 percent African American, 29.49 percent white and 0.11 percent Native American; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 4,470 households, 35.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 24.7 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 25.9 percent of all households were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.36 people.
30.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.8 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 84.6 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 22,330 USD , for a family is 27,312 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,008 versus $ 17,636 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,018. About 29.2 percent of families and 32.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
