history
Pontotoc County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1836 . It was named, like the district capital, after an Indian expression.
Three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Pontotoc County had 26,726 people in 10,097 households and 7,562 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.40 percent white, 13.98 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.80 percent of the population.
Of the 10,097 households, 37.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, and 25.1 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent of all households were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.08.
27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.5 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.8 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 94.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 90.8 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 32,055 USD , for a family is 39,845 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,074 versus $ 21,350 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,658. About 10.2 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
