The county is located in southeast Mississippi and has an area of 1,684 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water . It borders on the following counties:

history

Oliver H. Perry

Perry County was formed on February 3, 1820 from parts of Greene County. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819), a US naval officer and hero who became famous for the British-American War of 1812.

Two places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 2, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Perry County had 12,138 people in 4,420 households and 3,332 families . The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.17 percent white, 22.59 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.47 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.01 percent of the population.

Of the 4,420 households, 37.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers, and 24.6 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent of all households were single households and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.18.
