history

Henry Clay

Clay County was formed on May 12, 1871 from parts of Chickasaw County, Lowndes County, Monroe County and Oktibbeha County as Colfax County and later renamed. It was named after Henry Clay (1777-1852), a longtime member of both Houses of Congress and Secretary of State of the United States.

One place has National Historic Landmark status , the Waverley Mansion . A total of 28 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Clay County had 21,979 people in 8,152 households and 5,885 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 42.82 percent white, 56.33 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.86 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
