history

Henry Clay

Clay County was formed on May 12, 1871 from parts of Chickasaw County, Lowndes County, Monroe County and Oktibbeha County as Colfax County and later renamed. It was named after Henry Clay (1777-1852), a longtime member of both Houses of Congress and Secretary of State of the United States.

One place has National Historic Landmark status , the Waverley Mansion . A total of 28 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).
