history

James Alcorn

In what is now Alcorn County, the Battle of Corinth took place during the American Civil War in 1862 , which ended in a victory for Union forces.

Alcorn County was formed on April 15, 1870 from parts of Tippah County and Tishomingo County. It was named after James L. Alcorn (1816-1894), a former governor of Mississippi who was in office from 1870 to 1871 .

Due to its convenient location at the intersection of two railway lines, the Illinois Central Railroad (now CN ) and the Southern Railway (now NS ), the administrative center was established in the city of Corinth.

In Alcorn County there is a National Military Park , the Shiloh National Military Park . Another site has National Historic Landmark status , the Siege and Battle of Corinth Sites . A total of 20 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 31, 2018).
