Hardeman County was formed from Chickasaw Land on October 16, 1823 . It was named after Thomas Jones Hardeman (1788-1854), a member of the government of the Republic of Texas . At his suggestion, the capital of Texas was named Austin .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Siege and Battle of Corinth Sites . Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 16, 2018).
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Hardeman County had 27,253 people in 8,993 households. The population density was 15.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.62 people in each of the 8,993 households.
The racial the population was composed of 56.8 percent white, 41.4 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
20.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.5 percent were 65 years or older. 45.5 percent of the population was female.
