Weakley County was formed on October 23, 1823 as the original county from Chickasaw Land. It was named after Robert Weakley , a patriot in the American Revolutionary War and later a member of the Tennessee Senate and the US House of Representatives .

Ivandale is one of eleven entries for the county in the NRHP.

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 14, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , Weakley County had 35,021 people in 13,781 households. The population density was 23.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.35 people lived in the 13,781 households.
