Lewis County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Hohenwald .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Tennessee and covers an area of ​​732 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hickman County , Maury County , Lawrence County , Wayne County, and Perry County .

history

Lewis County was formed on December 23, 1843 from parts of Hickman County, Lawrence County, Maury County and Wayne County. It was named after Meriwether Lewis , an American explorer, soldier, and governor of the Louisiana Territory . He was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Lewis and Clark Expedition .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 23, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Lewis County had 11,367 people in 4,381 households and 3,215 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.07 percent white, 1.45 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.20 percent of the population.

Of the 4,381 households, 33.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, and 26.6 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average household size was 2.98 people.

25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,444 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,972. Males had a median income of $ 27,060 versus $ 19,847 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,664. 10.3 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
