Monroe County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Madisonville .

The county is located in east Tennessee, borders North Carolina and has an area of 1,690 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Loudon County , Blount County , Graham County, North Carolina, Cherokee County, North Carolina, Polk County, and McMinn County .

Monroe County was formed from Cherokee Country on November 13, 1819 . It was named after James Monroe , the fifth US president .

Monroe County Age Pyramid

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 38,961 people in 15,329 households and 11,236 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.87 percent white, 2.27 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 15,329 households, 32.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average household size was 2.94 people.

24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,337 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,902. Males had a median income of $ 29,621 versus $ 21,064 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,951. 15.5 percent of the population and 12.0 percent of families lived below the poverty line.
