Monroe County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Madisonville .

The county is located in east Tennessee, borders North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,690 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Loudon County , Blount County , Graham County, North Carolina, Cherokee County, North Carolina, Polk County, and McMinn County .

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 38,961 people in 15,329 households and 11,236 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.87 percent white, 2.27 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
