Montgomery County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Clarksville .

The county is located in northwest Tennessee, borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of ​​1,409 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Christian County, Kentucky, Todd County, Kentucky, Robertson County , Cheatham County , Dickson County , Houston County, and Stewart County .

The county is located in a karst landscape . Dunbar State Park is home to Dunbar Cave , a popular karst cave .

Montgomery County was formed from land of the Tennessee Territory on April 9, 1796. It was named after John Montgomery , a settler, Colonel in the Revolutionary War and leader of the Nickajack Expedition against the Creek Indians .

According to the 2000 census , Montgomery County's population was 134,768 people in 48,330 households and 35,957 families. The population density was 96 inhabitants per square kilometer.
