Montgomery County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Clarksville .

The county is located in northwest Tennessee, borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of 1,409 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Christian County, Kentucky, Todd County, Kentucky, Robertson County , Cheatham County , Dickson County , Houston County, and Stewart County .
The county is located in a karst landscape . Dunbar State Park is home to Dunbar Cave , a popular karst cave .

history
Montgomery County was formed from land of the Tennessee Territory on April 9, 1796. It was named after John Montgomery , a settler, Colonel in the Revolutionary War and leader of the Nickajack Expedition against the Creek Indians .

According to the 2000 census , Montgomery County's population was 134,768 people in 48,330 households and 35,957 families. The population density was 96 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.17 percent white, 19.18 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 1.82 percent Asian, 0.21 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.16 percent of the population.
Of the 48,330 households, 40.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers, and 25.6 percent were non-families. 20.2 percent were single households and 5.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average household size was 3.11.
28.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 12.3 percent between 18 and 24, 34.3 percent between 25 and 44, 17.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,981 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,023. Males had a median income of $ 30,696 versus $ 22,581 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,265. 7.9 percent of families and 10.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
