The Rhea County is a county in the state of Tennessee of the United States . The county seat is Dayton .
geography
The county is located in east-east Tennessee and has an area of 871 square kilometers, of which 53 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Cumberland County , Roane County , Meigs County , Hamilton County, and Bledsoe Counties .
history
Rhea County was formed on November 30, 1807 from parts of Roane County. It was named after John Rhea , a Tennessee politician and member of the House of Representatives .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Rhea County Courthouse . Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 27, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Rhea County had 28,400 people in 11,184 households and 8,108 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.41 percent white, 2.04 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.75 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.08 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.67 percent of the population.
Of the 11,184 households, 31.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, and 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average household size was 2.90 people.
23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the 30,418 USD , and the median income for a family was 35,580 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,066 versus $ 21,063 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,672. 11.4 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
