Dayton is a city in Rhea County , Tennessee , USA connected to the Tennessee River by Richland Creek . In the 2000 survey, a population of 6180 was registered. Dayton is the county seat of the county.

Dayton was best known for the 1925 monkey trial .

In 1879, the Englishman Sir Titus Salt , former mayor of Bradford , England , bought land in Rhea County and founded Titus Salt and Son Ltd to mine coal and iron ore. In 1883 the Dayton Coal and Iron Company , based in Saltaire , England, took over the further investments. The city of Dayton was founded around 1884. In 1925 the famous monkey trial took place in Dayton . This process pioneered the fact that the theory of evolution could be taught in schools. During the process, the city was briefly the focus of interest from tourists and journalists. In 2006 the novel Monkey Town: The Summer of the Scopes Trial by Ronald Kidd was published. The novel describes how the city stages the process for PR reasons in order to attract visitors and increase its own level of awareness.
