Houston County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Erin .

The county is located in northwest Tennessee, about 50 km to the north from Kentucky and has an area of 536 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stewart County , Montgomery County , Dickson County , Humphreys County, and Benton County .

history

Houston County was formed on January 21, 1871 from parts of Dickson County, Humphreys County and Stewart County. It was named after Sam Houston , the President of the Republic of Texas , later US Senator and Governor of Texas after his admission into the American Union.

The Quarry Limekiln is one of three entries for the county in the NRHP.

Three buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

Houston County Age Pyramid

As of the 2000 census , Houston County had 8,088 people in 3,216 households and 2,299 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.58 percent white, 3.31 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.95 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.25 percent of the population.

Of the 3,216 households, 31.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, and 28.5 percent were non-families. 25.3 percent were single households and 12.1 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average household size was 2.92 people.

24.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 40 years. Statistically, there were 97.8 males for every 100 females and 95.0 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.

The median income for a household in the 29,968 USD , and the median income for a family was 35,395 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,528 versus $ 19,983 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,614. 14.3 percent of families and 18.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
