Houston County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Erin .

The county is located in northwest Tennessee, about 50 km to the north from Kentucky and has an area of ​​536 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stewart County , Montgomery County , Dickson County , Humphreys County, and Benton County .

history

Houston County was formed on January 21, 1871 from parts of Dickson County, Humphreys County and Stewart County. It was named after Sam Houston , the President of the Republic of Texas , later US Senator and Governor of Texas after his admission into the American Union.

The Quarry Limekiln is one of three entries for the county in the NRHP.

Three buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Houston County had 8,088 people in 3,216 households and 2,299 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer.
