Wayne County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Waynesboro .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Tennessee, borders Alabama to the south and covers an area of ​​1905 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Perry County , Lewis County , Lawrence County , Lauderdale County, Alabama, Hardin County, and Decatur Counties .

history

Wayne County was formed on November 24, 1817 from parts of Hickman County and Humphreys County. It was named after Anthony Wayne , a US statesman and general in the American Revolutionary War , who was also known as "Mad Anthony" ( German  "Crazy Anthony" ).

The Collinwood Railroad Station is one of seven entries for the county in the NRHP.

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 14, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Wayne County had 16,842 people in 5,936 households and 4,321 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.92 percent white, 6.80 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.84 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.47 and the average household size was 2.93 people.

21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24, 31.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 121.7 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 125.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 26,576 , and the median income for a family was $ 30,973. Males had a median income of $ 27,879 versus $ 19,034 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,472. 12.9 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
