"Mad Anthony" Wayne

Anthony Wayne (born January 1, 1745 in Easttown Township , Chester County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  December 15, 1796 in Erie , Pennsylvania ), called "Mad Anthony" (Mad Anthony), was an American general and politician .

Life

Wayne took part in both the United States War of Independence against the British Crown and the Indian Wars . In 1775 he was elected to the Pennsylvania colonial parliament, but after a year he joined the army. On January 3, 1776, he was promoted to colonel and was given command of the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment . He was promoted to brigadier general in February of the following year . In 1779 he took command of a light infantry corps. With this unit he took the British post at Stony Point , New York, in a surprise attack on July 16 . In 1781 he served under La Fayette . In 1782 he defeated the Muskogee Indians. A year later he resigned as major general from the army.

Until 1792 he led a hapless civil life. He was for the state, among other Georgia in the United States Congress elected, but lost his seat after a few months. On March 5, 1792, Congress established a new army - the Legion of the United States  - and President George Washington named Wayne its commander . On August 20, 1794, Wayne's troops defeated the warriors of an alliance of Indian peoples at the Battle of Fallen Timbers . In 1796 he accepted the surrender of the British forts along the Great Lakes .

Anthony Wayne was the father of Congressman Isaac Wayne (1772-1852) from Pennsylvania.

In honor of Wayne, 17 US counties bear his name, including:

as well as the city of Fort Wayne , Indiana , which is also named after him.

Batman author Bill Finger named the protagonist Bruce Wayne after Anthony Wayne and Robert the Bruce .
