Clarence Saxby Chambliss (born November 10, 1943 in Warrenton , Warren County , North Carolina ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of Georgia in the US Senate from 2003 to 2015 .

Youth, family, early career

Chambliss attended CE Byrd High School in Shreveport , Louisiana until 1960 . He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1966 and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1968 . After graduating there, he worked as a lawyer.

During the Vietnam War, his studies helped him not to be drafted. After graduating there, he was described as unfit with a broken knee.

Political career

House of Representatives

Chambliss moved into the House of Representatives in 1994 when the Republicans won a majority in both chambers of Congress in the mid-term election for the first time in a long time . In the elections in 1996, 1998 and 2000 he was able to defend the seat. During his time as an MP there, he was a member of the Committee on Intelligence and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security.

In 2002 Chambliss ran for election to the Senate and was able to prevail against the Democratic incumbent Max Cleland with 53:46 percent . In the campaign he advertised primarily with his positions on defense policy and a strong homeland security. But it was also one of the most controversial campaigns of the election year, as he portrayed his opponent Cleland in television spots along with Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, portraying him as a national security risk.

The portrayal of Cleland, an award-winning Vietnam veteran and triple amputee as a result of the war, as unpatriotic drew wide criticism. Republican John McCain described the campaigns as "worse than disgraceful, it's reprehensible", while Chuck Hagel , Republican Senator for Nebraska, stated that the ads were "beyond offensive to me."

In 2008, Chambliss was re-elected as Senator in a runoff election against Democrat Jim Martin after narrowly missing the 50 percent vote required by Georgia law in the first ballot.

In the Senate, Chambliss acted extremely conservatively. The ratings of various lobby groups on his votes reflect this:

Chambliss is the main sponsor of the FairTax Act , which aims to replace all US state taxes with a single national sales tax.

His son Bo Chambliss is a lobbyist for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange , on which agricultural goods are traded; the same business that falls under his father's political oversight as Chairman of the Agriculture Committee. Only since 2004 has an order existed in the office that Chambliss employees should not influence negotiations in which his son is involved.

In January 2013, Chambliss announced that after two terms in office in the 2014 Senate election, he did not want to apply again for his seat.
