Florence Reville Gibbs (born April 4, 1890 in Thomson , McDuffie County , Georgia , †  August 19, 1964 in Jesup , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1940 and 1941 she represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Florence Reville, her maiden name, attended the public schools in her home country and Brenau College in Gainesville . She later married the lawyer W. Benjamin Gibbs . He was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 1938 congressional election as the Democratic Party candidate in the eighth constituency of Georgia . There he was able to exercise his mandate from January 3, 1939 until his death on August 7, 1940. In the by-election that became necessary as a result, his widow Florence was elected as his successor to the House of Representatives, where she ended her husband's legislative period between October 1, 1940 and March 3, 1941. This made her the first woman to represent Georgia in the US House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of 1940 , Florence Gibbs declined to run again. In the following years she was no longer politically active. She died on August 19, 1964 in Jesup.
