George Thomas Barnes

George Thomas Barnes (born August 14, 1833 in Augusta , Georgia , †  October 24, 1901 there ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Barnes first attended private schools and then the Richmond Academy and Franklin College . He then studied until 1853 at the University of Georgia in Athens . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1855, he began to work in his new profession in Augusta. During the Civil War he was a lieutenant and later brevet major in the army of the Confederacy .

Politically, Barnes was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1860 and 1865 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives , in addition to his military activities in the Civil War . From 1876 to 1884 Barnes was a member of the Democratic National Committee . In the congressional election of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Thomas Hardeman on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 .

In the elections of 1890 he was defeated by Thomas E. Watson of the Populist Party . After leaving the US House of Representatives, George Barnes returned to work as a lawyer. He died on October 24, 1901 in his hometown of Augusta.
