Lynn A. Westmoreland (born April 2, 1950 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American politician . From 2005 to 2017 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lynn Westmoreland attended Therrell High School and then studied until 1971 at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He then worked in the real estate and construction industries. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1993 and 2004 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . There he temporarily headed the Republican parliamentary group.

In the 2004 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Mac Collins on January 3, 2005 . After several re-elections, he can exercise his mandate in Congress for a total of twelve years. Since 2007, however, he has represented the third district of Georgia as the successor to James C. Marshall . In the meantime he was a member of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure , the Committee on Medium-Sized Enterprises , the Committee on Government Reform and several sub-committees. He later served on the Committee on Financial Services and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence as well as the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi and two subcommittees. In the presidential election campaign of 2008, he attracted attention with some derogatory remarks against the Democratic candidate and eventual election winner Barack Obama .

After Lynn Westmoreland was confirmed in office in the 2014 congressional elections , he was able to take up another two-year term in Congress on January 3, 2015. Two years later he decided not to run again. Therefore, he left the Congress on January 3, 2017. He and his wife, Joan, have three grown children. The family lives privately in Sharpsburg .
