John W. Maddox

John W. Maddox (born June 3, 1848 in Gore , Chattooga County , Georgia , †  September 27, 1922 in Rome , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1905 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Maddox attended public schools in his home country. Despite his youth, he took part in the civil war as a soldier in the Confederate Army from 1863 . After the war he continued his education. After that he worked in agriculture and from 1871 in railway construction. In the meantime, he was also deputy sheriff's deputy chief of police in Chattooga County. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1877, he began working in his new profession in Summerville . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1877, Maddox was elected Mayor of Summerville; from 1878 to 1880 he was a county commissioner . From 1880 to 1884 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives , and from 1884 to 1886 he was a member of the State Senate . He was then a judge in the judicial district of Rome until 1892.

In the congressional election of 1892 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Robert W. Everett on March 4, 1893 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1905 . The Spanish-American War took place during this period . In 1904 Maddox declined to run again.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, he initially worked as a lawyer again. Between 1906 and 1907 he was mayor of Rome; from 1908 to 1912 he served as a judge in the Superior Court of Georgia . He then headed the State Mutual Life Insurance Company as President . In addition to these activities, he also practiced as a lawyer. John Maddox died in Rome on September 27, 1922.
