Daniel Newnan

Daniel Newnan (born around 1780 in Salisbury , Rowan County , North Carolina , †  January 16, 1851 in Rossville , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1831 and 1833 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date of birth of Daniel Newnan is unknown. He was born in North Carolina around 1780 and attended schools in his homeland. In 1796 and 1797 he studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . From 1799 to 1801 Newnan was a lieutenant in an infantry unit in the US Army . He later settled in Georgia, where he worked as a planter , among other things . From 1812 to 1814 he commanded a force assembled from volunteers in the war against the Creek . In 1817 he became major general in the state militia. Between 1823 and 1825, Newnan ran the Georgia State Penitentiary.

Politically, Newnan joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson in the 1820s . He later became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him in 1828 . Between 1825 and 1827 he was Secretary of State, the executive officer of the state government of Georgia. In the state-wide held congressional election of 1830 Newnan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the first mandate of Georgia , where he succeeded Charles Eaton Haynes on March 4, 1831 . Since he was not confirmed in 1832, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1833 . This was overshadowed by discussions about President Jackson's policies.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Daniel Newnan did not hold any other higher political office. He died in Rossville on January 16, 1851.
