Tomlinson Fort
Tomlinson Fort (born July 14, 1787 in Warrenton , Georgia , † May 11, 1859 in Milledgeville , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1827 and 1829 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Tomlinson Fort first attended schools in his home country. After a subsequent medical degree at Philadelphia Medical College and his license as a doctor in 1810, he began to work in his new profession. During the British-American War of 1812 he was a captain in a volunteer unit. After the war he began a political career. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson . He later became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him .
Between 1818 and 1826, Fort was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1826 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the third mandate from Georgia , where he succeeded George Cary on March 4, 1827 . By March 3, 1829, he completed a term in Congress . This was determined by heated discussions between supporters and opponents of Andrew Jackson.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Tomlinson Fort initially worked as a doctor again. He was President of the State Bank of Georgia from 1832 until his death . He died in Milledgeville on May 11, 1859.
