Cynthia Ann McKinney (born March 17, 1955 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American politician who ran in the presidential election in November 2008 as a candidate for the Green Party .

Cynthia McKinney was born in 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of one of Atlanta's first black police officers, later the politician Billy McKinney . She attended St. Joseph High School and then studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles , where she received her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1978 . She was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1988 to 1992 . McKinney was elected to the House of Representatives of the 103rd US Congress for the Democratic Party in November 1992 and represented the fourth constituency of the state of Georgia from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2003 , with four successful re-elections . 2002 she tried unsuccessful for another candidacy.

It was not until 2005 that she succeeded in returning to the United States' House of Representatives , whose legislative term lasted from January 3, 2005 to January 3, 2007. In 2006 she tried again unsuccessfully for another candidacy.

During her first term in office, McKinney campaigned for a law to expand the benefits of Agent Orange victims among Vietnam veterans. In October 2001, it tabled a legislative initiative "suspending the use, sale, development, production, testing and export of ammunition made from depleted uranium pending the results of various studies on the health effects of such ammunition" .

Cynthia McKinney was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 as part of the 1000 Women Project in recognition of her commitment to peace and human rights for the Nobel Peace Prize.

She has been a member of the Green Party since October 2007. McKinney advocates, among other things, the rights of African American people and the abolition of the death penalty . In the presidential election in November 2008, she ran as a candidate for her new party.

In 2008 and 2009 McKinney took part in the Free Gaza Movement , which aims to break the Israeli sea ​​blockade of the Gaza Strip and to transport aid to Gaza.
