James M. Griggs
James Mathews Griggs (born March 29, 1861 in LaGrange , Troup County , Georgia , † January 5, 1910 in Dawson , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1910 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Griggs attended the common schools and then to 1881 the Peabody Normal College in Nashville ( Tennessee ). He then worked as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1883, he began to work in his new profession in Alapaha . At the same time he also got into the newspaper business. In 1885 Griggs moved to Dawson County . Between 1888 and 1893 he was a public prosecutor in the Pataula district; then he worked there as a judge until 1896.
Politically, Griggs was a member of the Democratic Party . In June 1892 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where ex-President Grover Cleveland was once again nominated as a presidential candidate. In the 1896 congressional election , Griggs was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Benjamin E. Russell on March 4, 1897 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 5, 1910 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . Between 1904 and 1908 Griggs headed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee .
