Edgar Lanier "Ed" Jenkins (born January 4, 1933 in Young Harris , Towns County , Georgia , † January 1, 2012 in Atlanta , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1993 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Ed Jenkins, born in Young Harris, Georgia, attended public schools in his homeland. In 1951 he worked in the office for the FBI . He then served in the US Coast Guard between 1952 and 1955 . After completing a law degree at the University of Georgia in Athens and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession in 1958. From 1962 to 1964, Jenkins was the assistant federal attorney for northern Georgia; between 1968 and 1972 he served as the district attorney in Pickens County .

Career

Politically, Jenkins was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1959 to 1962 he was on the staff of Congressman Phillip M. Landrum . In the 1976 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Landrum on January 3, 1977. After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . Jenkins campaigned for the textile industry and tax cuts.

In 1992, Ed Jenkins declined to run again. Then he withdrew from politics. Most recently he lived in Jasper .
