Sanford Dixon Bishop Jr. (born February 4, 1947 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American politician . Since 1993 he has represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sanford Bishop attended the public schools in his hometown of Mobile. He then studied at Morehouse College in Atlanta until 1968 . After studying law at Emory University School of Law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession. Between 1969 and 1971 he served in the US Army .

Bishop became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1977 and 1991 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives ; from 1991 to 1993 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1992 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Charles Floyd Hatcher , whom he defeated in the primary on January 3, 1993 . After he was confirmed in each of the following elections, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. Bishop is or was a member of the Approval Committee and three of its sub-committees. In 2002 he voted for the Iraq war . He supported Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election .

Sanford Bishop is married and lives privately in Albany .
