John Linder

John Elmer Linder (born September 9, 1942 in Deer River , Itasca County , Minnesota ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 2011 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

John Linder attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1964 at the University of Minnesota in Duluth . At the same university he studied dentistry until 1967. He was then a member of the US Air Force between 1967 and 1969 . After returning to civilian life, he worked as a dentist. He also ran a credit institution between 1977 and 1992. Politically, Linder joined the Republican Party . From 1976 to 1980 and again from 1982 to 1990 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . In 1990 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 1992 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Ben Jones on January 3, 1993 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2011 . For the 2010 elections, he decided not to run again; Rob Woodall , his chief of staff since 1994, succeeded him.

During his time in the US House of Representatives he represented the fourth district until 1997, then between 1997 and 2003 the eleventh and finally since 2003 the seventh district of his state. This is partly due to a restructuring and renaming of the constituencies. Linder was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and three of its sub-committees. He campaigned for tax reform. Linder was considered a more conservative MP. He is married and lives privately in Duluth, Georgia.
