Stephen A. Corker
Stephen Alfestus Corker (born May 7, 1830 in Waynesboro , Burke County , Georgia , † October 18, 1879 ibid) was an American politician . Between December 1870 and March 1871 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stephen Corker attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Waynesboro in his new profession. He also worked in agriculture. During the Civil War , Corker was a captain in a regiment made up of soldiers from the state of Georgia, who fought on the Confederation side . After the war he continued his practice as a lawyer.
Politically, Corker became a member of the Democratic Party . As their candidate, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives after the Civil War . In the congressional elections of 1868 , the Republican incumbent Charles H. Prince actually prevailed in the fifth constituency of Georgia. In the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , however, his seat was refused and special elections were announced. Stephen Corker was able to prevail in these elections and take up his new mandate in Congress on December 22, 1870 . By March 3, 1871, he ended the current legislative period there.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Stephen Corker returned to work as a lawyer. He died on October 18, 1879 in his hometown of Waynesboro.
