George Darden

George Washington "Buddy" Darden (born November 22, 1943 in Hancock County , Georgia ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1995 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

George Darden attended Sparta High School until 1961 and then studied at the University of Georgia in Athens until 1965 . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1967, he began to work in his new profession. Between 1968 and 1972 he served as the assistant district attorney in Cobb County ; from 1973 to 1976 he was a regular district attorney there .

Politically, Darden became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1980 and 1983 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . Following the death of Congressman Larry McDonald , who was a victim of the downing of Korean Airlines Flight 007 , Darden was elected to the Georgia’s seventh seat as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he was elected took up his new mandate on November 8, 1983. After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1995 . The 27th amendment to the constitution was passed there in 1992 .

In the 1994 congressional election, Darden was defeated by Republican Bob Barr . In 2002 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the upcoming congressional elections that year. In 1996, 2000 and 2004 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . Since leaving the US House of Representatives, Darden has served on various commissions and committees. Among other things, he served on the Georgia State Judicial Commission from 1999 to 2003, which is responsible for judge appointments. Between 2002 and 2007, Darden served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of LaGrange College . In 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services in this capacity.

Since 1995, George Darden has been a partner in the Atlanta- based law practice McKenna, Long and Aldrich . He has been married to Lillian Budd since 1968, with whom he has two children. The family lives privately in Marietta .
