Ben Lewis Jones (born August 30, 1941 in Tarboro , Edgecombe County , North Carolina ) is an American actor and politician . Between 1989 and 1993 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ben Jones attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth ( Virginia ) until 1959 . He then studied between 1961 and 1964 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He then worked as a professional entertainer in show business. Between 1979 and 1985 he played the role of Cooter Davenport in the television series " A Duke Seldom Comes Alone " ( The Dukes of Hazzard ) .

Politically, Jones joined the Democratic Party . In 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1988 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Pat Swindall on January 3, 1989 , whom he had defeated in the election. A perjury charge against Swindall helped him in the election. After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1993. During this time the 27th amendment to the constitution was passed. In the run-up to the elections in 1992 he was defeated in the primary of his party. In 1994 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress.

After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Jones returned to show business. He was also active as a writer. In 1998 he caused a stir when he, although a member of the Democratic Party, asked President Bill Clinton to resign in the impeachment proceedings . He had previously acted as an actor in the film " With All Power ", in the center of which a character based on Clinton - played by John Travolta - is and is critically examined. In 2002 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Virginia.
