Edgecombe County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Tarboro , which was named after the nearby Tar River .

geography

The county is located in northeastern North Carolina, about 60 km to the north from Virginia , and has an area of ​​1,312 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Halifax County , Martin County , Pitt County , Wilson County, and Nash County .

Edgecombe County is divided into 14 numbered townships : 1 (Tarboro), 2 (Lower Conetoe), 3 (Upper Conetoe), 4 (Deep Creek), 5 (Lower Fishing Creek), 6 (Upper Fishing Creek), 7 (Swift Creek ), 8 (Sparta), 9 (Otter Creek), 10 (Lower Town Creek), 11 (Walnut Creek), 12 (Rocky Mount), 13 (Cokey) and 14 (Upper Town Creek).

history

Edgecombe County was formed on April 4, 1741 from parts of Bertie County. It was named after Richard Edgcumbe , a British nobleman, Member of Parliament and Treasury Secretary. In 1987 the County and Tarboro was the location for the film Summer Heat .

Coolmore (1940)

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Coolmore Plantation House . A total of 37 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Edgecombe County had 55,606 people in 20,392 households and 14,804 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 40.06 percent white, 57.46 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 86.8 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 80.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,983, and the median income for a family is $ 35,902. Males had a median income of $ 27,300 versus $ 21,649 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,435. 19.6 percent of the population and 16.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 27.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 18.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.
