Haywood County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 54,033 people and a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Waynesville , which was named after General Anthony Wayne .

geography

The county is located in western North Carolina, bordering Tennessee to the north, about 25 miles from Georgia and South Carolina to the south, and has an area of 1,436 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Buncombe County , Transylvania County , Jackson County, and Swain County .

Haywood County is divided into 15 townships : Beaverdam, Bethel, Cataloochee (in the Cataloochee Valley ), Cecil, Clyde, Crabtree, Cruso, East Fork, Fines Creek, Iron Duff, Ivy Hill, Jonathan Creek, Pigeon, Waynesville and White Oak.

history

Haywood County was formed on December 15, 1808 from parts of Buncombe County. It was named after John Haywood , a US politician and Treasury Secretary.

A total of 24 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Haywood County's population was 54,033. 961 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 23,100 households and 16,054 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.85 percent white , 1.27 percent African American , 0.49 percent American Indian , 0.21 percent Asian American , 0.04 percent Pacific islander and 0.44 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races . 1.41 percent of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

Of the 23,100 households, 26.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers and 30.5 percent were non-families. 26.7 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.76 people.

20.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 19.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 92.0 males. For all women aged 18 and over, there were 88.7 men.

The median income for a household in the 33,922 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 40,438. Males had a median income of $ 30,731 versus $ 21,750 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,554. 11.5 percent of the population and 8.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 17.4 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 10.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
