Hertford County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Winton , named after Benjamin Wynns , who donated the land to the city.

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north , is about 120 km from the Atlantic Ocean to the east and has an area of ​​933 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gates County , Chowan County , Bertie County, and Northampton County .

Hertford County is divided into six townships : Ahoskie, Harrellsville, Maneys Neck, Murfreesboro, St. Johns, and Winton.

Hertford County was formed on May 1, 1760 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County and Northampton County. It was named after Francis Seymour Conway, Earl of Hertford .

According to the 2000 census , Hertford County had 22,601 people. 420 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,953 households and 6,240 families.
