Hertford County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Winton , named after Benjamin Wynns , who donated the land to the city.

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north , is about 120 km from the Atlantic Ocean to the east and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gates County , Chowan County , Bertie County, and Northampton County .
Hertford County is divided into six townships : Ahoskie, Harrellsville, Maneys Neck, Murfreesboro, St. Johns, and Winton.
history
Hertford County was formed on May 1, 1760 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County and Northampton County. It was named after Francis Seymour Conway, Earl of Hertford .

According to the 2000 census , Hertford County had 22,601 people. 420 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,953 households and 6,240 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 37.45 percent white, 59.55 percent African American, 1.19 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.65 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,953 households, 30.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.8 percent of these were married couples living together, 19.5 percent were single mothers and 30.3 percent were non-families. 26.9 percent were single households and 12.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 85.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 79.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,422 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 32,002. Males had a median income of $ 26,730 versus $ 20,144 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,641. 18.3 percent of the population and 15.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 21.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 21.0 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
