Perquimans County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hertford , which was named after the English city of Hertford .

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, about 30 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of 852 square kilometers, of which 212 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pasquotank County , Chowan County, and Gates County .

Perquimans County was formed in 1672. It was named after an Indian tribe.
A total of 18 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 12, 2018).

Perquimans County's population was 11,368 as of the 2000 census . 120 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,645 households and 3,376 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.82 percent white, 27.99 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60 percent of the population.
Of the 4,645 households, 28.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers and 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent were single households and 11.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
23.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 19.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 91.3 males. For all women aged 18 years or over, there were 87.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 29,538 US dollars and the median income for a family was 35,212 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,251 versus $ 18,728 for females. The per capita income was 15,728. 17.9 percent of the population and 13.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 27.2 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.8 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
