Swain County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Bryson City , which was named after Captain Thaddeus Bryson .
geography
The county is located almost in the far west of North Carolina, borders Tennessee in the north , is about 35 km from Georgia in the south and has an area of 1,400 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Haywood County , Jackson County , Macon County, and Graham Counties .
Swain County is divided into three townships : Charleston, Forneys Creek, and Nantahala.
history
Swain County was formed in 1871 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after David L. Swain , the governor of North Carolina from 1832 to 1835 and subsequent president of the University of North Carolina for 33 years.
Nine buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Swain County had 12,968 people in 5,137 households and 3,631 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.33 percent white, 1.70 percent African American, 29.03 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,137 households, 30.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.9 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 94.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 91.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 28,608 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,786. Males had a median income of $ 26,570 versus $ 20,722 for women. The per capita income was $ 14,647. 18.3 percent of the population and 13.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 25.6 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 19.1 percent are 65 years of age or older.
