Cumberland County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Fayetteville , named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonist side and played an important role in the French Revolution .

The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,705 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Harnett County , Sampson County , Bladen County , Robeson County , Hoke County, and Moore Counties .

Cumberland County is divided into eleven townships : Beaver Dam, Black River, Carvers Creek, Cedar Creek, Cross Creek, Eastover, Gray's Creek, Manchester, Pearces Mill, Rockfish and Seventy-First.

history

Cumberland County was formed in 1754 from parts of Bladen County. It was named after Wilhelm August, Duke of Cumberland , an important British military leader and third son of George II , King of England, and Queen Caroline von Ansbach . In 1831 a major fire destroyed around 600 houses and 100 shops.

Historical objects

The historic Henry McLean House is in Fayetteville . The house is on Hay Street at number 1006. The building, constructed in 1840, was listed on July 7, 1983 by the National Register of Historic Places as a historic monument with the number 83001864.

According to the 2000 census , Cumberland County had 302,963 people in 107,358 households and 77,619 families. The population density was 179 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.15 percent white, 34.90 percent African American, 1.55 percent Native American, 1.88 percent Asian, 0.30 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.09 percent were descended from two or more races. The average age was 30 years. For all females there were 102.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 101.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 37,466, and the median income for a family is $ 41,459. Males had a median income of $ 28,308 versus $ 22,379 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,376. 12.8 percent of the population and 10.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.8 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 13.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
