Yancey County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Burnsville .
geography
The county is located in western North Carolina, bordering Tennessee and has an area of 811 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Mitchell Counties , McDowell Counties , Buncombe Counties , and Madison Counties .
Yancey County is divided into eleven townships : Brush Creek, Burnsville, Cane River, Crabtree, Egypt, Green Mountain, Jacks Creek, Pensacola, Price's Creek, Ramseytown, and South Toe.
history
Yancey County was formed in 1833 from parts of Burke County and Buncombe County. It was named after Bartlett Yancey , a member of the US Congress .
Eight buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

After the census in 2000 17,774 people lived in Yancey County. 151 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,472 households and 5,372 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.99 percent white, 0.57 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups; about 0.56 percent are descended from two or more races. 2.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,472 households, 27.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent of these were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers and 28.1 percent were non-families. 25.4 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.81 people.
21.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 18.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 95.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 93.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,674 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,879. Males had a median income of $ 26,800 versus $ 20,885 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,335. 15.8 percent of the population and 10.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 22.1 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 16.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
