Chowan County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Edenton , which was named after Charles Eden , an early governor.

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, about 25 miles north of Virginia and has an area of ​​604 square kilometers, of which 157 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Perquimans County , Bertie County , Hertford County, and Gates County .

history

The county was formed in 1671 and was originally called Shaftesbury . It was given its current name 13 years later. It was named after the Chowanoke Indian tribe .

According to the 2000 census , Chowan County had 14,526 people in 5,580 households and 4,006 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.54 percent white, 37.52 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.51 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.

23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 17.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For all females there were 88.1 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 84.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,928 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,986. Males had a median income of $ 29,719 versus $ 19,826 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,027. 17.6 percent of the population and 13.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. 25.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 16.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
