Orange County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hillsborough , which was named after the Earl of Hillsborough .
geography
The county is located just north of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of 1,039 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Person County , Durham County , Chatham County , Alamance County, and Caswell County .
Orange County is divided into seven townships : Bingham, Cedar Grove, Chapel Hill, Cheeks, Eno, Hillsborough, and Little River.
history
Orange County was formed in 1752. It was named either after William V. Batavus Prince of Orange , the son of Prince William IV of Orange and Anna of England , who was the daughter of King George II of Great Britain , or King Wilhelm III.
There are three National Historic Landmarks in the county , the Nash-Hooper House , the Old East University Building and the Playmakers Theater . A total of 48 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 10, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Orange County's population was 118,227. Of these, 9,943 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 45,863 households and 26,141 families. The population density was 114 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.05 percent white, 13.79 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 4.10 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.96 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 45,863 households, 28.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers and 43.0 percent were non-families. 28.1 percent were single households and 6.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.95 people.
20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 21.0 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 8.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For all females there were 90.1 males. For all women aged 18 years or over, there were 86.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 42,372 US dollars and the median income for a family was 59,874 USD. Males had a median income of $ 39,298 versus $ 31,328 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,873. 14.1 percent of the population and 6.2 percent of families lived below the poverty line, including 9.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 7.4 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
